The Greatest Road Trip USA? - Our Round USA Road Tour.

Citizen Band Radio

Part of the year long trip from Sept ’94 - Sept ’95 through 36 USA States and 2 Canadian Provinces by Jean and Graham Beven in 'Serendipity' their 30 foot Winnebago 'Chieftain'.

Citizens Band Radio or as it is known colloquially as CB.

I would not necessarily recommend purchasing a CB radio for your trip to the USA. It was of little value to us, other than entertainment. CB is legal in most states and it is after all another emergency communications aid. The police highway patrols do monitor the broadcast channels, as do some diners and petrol stations.

No CB operating licence was required in Texas when we were there and we never bothered to check in other states we visited.

A CB Transceiver was already fitted to our RV when we purchased her. With a variable range, depending on the terrain and weather. A CB radio is only any use if anyone else had ‘their ears on!’ within range.

It is good fun to listen to the ‘Truckers’ conversations. A broad mind is required if you are planning to eavesdrop on them! The language and subjects covered can be quite colourful. We heard ‘hookers’ chatting up prospective clients and arranging rendezvous. If you do use your CB you leave yourself open to questioning about your ‘accent’. Most Truckers use channel 9. Only switching to another to ‘Talk private’. The recognised RV Channel is Channel 13. Not many people used it; they were too busy listening to (out for) the Truckers!
